Current projects

There’s always something going on in the Washington, D.C. metro area. You shouldn’t miss out on a single thing because of traffic. New Express Lanes projects are paving the way for easier travel to get you from here to there.
Current Projects: 395

395 Express Lanes

We’re currently underway with extending the 95 Express Lanes 8 miles north to the D.C. line with our 395 Express Lanes project. The project will create 3 reversible Express Lanes by:

  • Adding a new lane
  • Converting the 2 existing HOV lanes into Express Lanes

With the opening of the 395 Express Lanes, customers will enjoy more driving options and faster travel times in the 395 corridor. Wondering how they’ll run? Just like the 495 and 95 Express Lanes in Northern Virginia.

Driving to a 2019 grand opening

There’s a lot in motion for the opening of the 395 Express Lanes in late 2019. To give you an idea of how the 395 Express Lanes project is benefitting the area, the project is expected to create an estimated 600 jobs along with generating $500 million in economic activity.

As we count down to the opening, you'll see our crews making progress on the Lanes along I-395. If you have any questions about the project, head to our 395 Express Lanes website.

Fredericksburg Extension

We have the green light to extend the 95 Express Lanes to Fredericksburg, VA, as part of the Fredericksburg Extension. We’ll break ground on extending the 95 Express Lanes south 10 miles in spring 2019 for this project.

The Fredericksburg Extension will pick up where the 95 Express Lanes currently end, just past Route 610 in Stafford County, and extend to near Route 17. We’re planning to open the new lanes to travelers in fall 2022.

What to expect

The 95 corridor is one of the country’s most congested areas to drive. We’re working to fix that. As part of the project, drivers will benefit from:

  • A 66% increase in roadway capacity on I-95 during rush hour periods
  • New access points providing faster and easier access to Quantico and the area's 28,000 workers
  • Improvements and time savings to regular I-95 lanes adjacent to the Express Lanes
  • An estimated 9,100 jobs and $1.1 billion in economic activity during construction
